I have a thing for keys. I framed keys to include in my family room gallery wall. I love the architecture of keys. Each one is different, yet a key is a key. They can unlock doors or lock things up to keep them safe. Keys are a beautiful symbol and I like using them in decor.
I just found this amazing oversized key at HomeGoods. I had seen one there previously for $19.99, but the notches at the bottom of the key were not cut out, so I passed. I love oversized everyday objects as decor, but they have to look realistic to really work. Luckily a few weeks later, I spotted this one for only $14.99 and it was beautifully cut and distressed. I did not hesitate to put it in my cart.
When I got home, I ran around the house holding my giant key up to various walls and asking my hubby, “do you like it here?” We do this exercise often. More often than my hubby would like. Sometimes he even holds up the objects for me, so I can stand back and take a look.
We decided the perfect spot was in the dining room. On the small wall next to the arched recess above the board and batten. The key looked amazing hung vertically. This small wall is visible when you enter the house from the front door. I think the symbolism of a key to our home is exactly what we want guests to feel when they enter and when they join us for a meal in the dining room.
I hung the key from the top hanging hole on the back, but it hung crooked. I grabbed a 3M command strip from my stash (yes I keep a small stash of them on my craft room shelves). I placed the strip at the bottom of the key to help hold it straight.
Want to know the best thing about my new dining room key decor? It is almost like I planned it this way. I should probably take the credit, despite it being a fluke coincidence. The key design has eery similarities to the pattern in my beloved DIY tablecloth dining chair slipcovers. It is as if they were meant for the same room. Jackpot.
