I have used balloons for past parties, but I am not that fond of the results.  If you buy one of those party helium tanks it only lasts for one party.  I have gotten creative and used helium-less balloons for a birthday morning surprise and for a hanging display.  But regardless of how they are used, balloons still look a bit tacky and cannot be re-used.  I have started to move away from balloons in my party decorating and am instead using paper lanterns.

Here are 10 reasons why I think paper lanterns are better than balloons for party decor:

  1. They look more sophisticated.  Paper lanterns can make any soiree look high-end.
  2. They have an adorable round shape.  You can’t find this perfect round cuteness in your average balloon.
  3. They don’t need to be blown up.  Simply pull the paper lantern open and insert the metal frame to hold the round shape.
  4. They come in a variety of sizes from tiny string lights to jumbo globes.  Use all the same size for a modern look or mix and match various sizes and colors for an eclectic feel.
  5. They are relatively inexpensive, considering they can be re-used endlessly.  Depending on size, individual paper lanterns can be less than a $1.  Even large 30″ lanterns can be found for as low as $15.
  6. They are reusable.  Paper lanterns can be used as permanent decor or collapsed in between uses and used over and over again.
  7. They store flat.  Paper lanterns collapse flat, so even the really large ones are easy to store.
  8. They can be lit from inside.  A light kit or string lights can be used to light paper lanterns from the inside, adding a beautiful glow to any celebration.  I have even seen solar powered paper lanterns.
  9. The colors are more saturated.  No fading occurs like when you inflate a balloon.  You can even get patterned paper lanterns.
  10. No strings attached.  Strings aren’t required unless you want to hang them as a paper lantern chandelier or for a dazzling overhead display.  Alternatively, they could be set directly on a table or clustered in a group on a shelf.

My paper lantern collection is growing with each party I throw.  With the most recent bug party I was able to use green lanterns from the Wild Rumpus party, yellow lanterns from the Milk & Cookies party, along with a few new turquoise lanterns to create a giant paper lantern chandelier.  It was a big decor statement for very little effort and money.  All those lanterns have been collapsed back down for storage until the next party.

Kerry, The small green and yellow ones are from Michaels. The various size blue ones came as a set from Hobby Lobby. They are also available at party supply stores and online sites like Oriental Trading Co.
