I have been dreaming of a votive candle wall above the bathtub since we moved into this house nearly two years ago.  The one thing I did not want was a large metal votive holder.  I wanted something simpler and lighter.  I wanted to let the flickering candle flames be the focus.  I pinned two inspiration images; one of DIY hanging mason jar votive holders and another of assorted hanging glass votive holders.

I was comfortable doing a little DIY project to bring my vision to reality, but just the other day in Target, I stumbled across glass hanging votive holders in the $1 section.  They were $2.50 for a pack of three.  I instantly grabbed up 7 packs, for a total of 21 hanging votive holders.  With a few other supplies and about 30 minutes, I created a romantic votive candle wall in the master bathroom.

To create the votive wall, I also picked up two 12-packs of tea light candles and cup hooks.  I found all the supplies at Target (thank you Target for sparing me an extra trip to the hardware store).  I chose the slightly pricier Jasmine scented tea lights in clear containers.  I thought they would look better in the clear glass votive holders than the cheap metal tea lights.  The total cost for this project was under $30 (21 votive holders = $17.50, 30 cup hooks = $4, 24 tea light candles = $8).

I used my 48″ level to draw three level lines on the wall space above the tub and below the window.  The top line is 3″ below the windowsill.  The spacing between the lines is 8″.  The votive candles when hung are approximately 5″ from the top of the hanger to the bottom of the glass cup.  With 21 votives, I planned for 7 in each row.  I spaced the votives 7″ apart, making one row about 49″ wide.  On the middle row, I staggered the votives halfway in between, still 7” apart.  I had a few minor mis-calculations, so my votive arrangement is not centered on the window.  In the end, I think it is okay to give the towel bar a little more breathing room.

The lit wall is truly stunning and magical.  The votive holders cast beautiful shadows.  Thankfully I have a propane lighter, which makes lighting 21 tea lights a bit easier than it sounds.  Bathing alone is a truly relaxing experience with the glow of the candles and the scent of jasmine.  The glowing wall is also perfect for a romantic bubble bath with my husband.  I guess romance can be had for under $30.

  3. How cool is that! I love lighting candles when I take a bath. You must have a well stocked dollar section at Target. Everytime I check out our Target all I see is junk. Maybe I need to think outside the box more.

Lisa, It is about seeing the diamond in the rough. These gems were stuffed in a bin on the bottom shelf amongst the other “junk”.

Such a beautiful wall. Thanks for your instructions. I have a question, tho. Call me Nervous Nellie, but do the votive holders get too hot leaning against the painted wall? I’d be worried about the paint getting hot and bubbling.

    • Jackie says:

Randa, I thought about that too. Then I realized there were retailers that sell glass votive holders designed to be nailed to the wall (CB2 has some). Also, I used tea light candles which have their own little container. We had them lit the first night for about an hour with no issues at all. I don’t think we will ever have them lit longer than that.

Do you think that Target still has these? I cant find them online…do you know what they were called exactly…? Thanks for your help!

    • Jackie says:

I just saw them again in my Target a few days ago in the dollar section. I don’t know if those products are available online. The packaging did not have a brand name or anything. Good luck finding them. If you have a local store I would check there.

Loved this idea. Did the wire that holds the votive candle holders come with it? Where would you get those if it didn’t?

    • Jackie says:

      Tee,
These came ready to hang, but I’ve seen projects on pinterest using mason jars and wire. You could get wire from a craft store or hardware store!
