We have house guests this week and I “finished” the guest room just in time.  Of course, like any room in my home, it will never be finished, but I think you will agree this room definitely had a style boost.  My goal was to make this room inviting, cozy, and interesting.  I spent less than $200 to achieve my goal.

The biggest change is the layout.  I previously shared our challenges with furniture placement in this room.  I think we figured out a new arrangement, which maximizes the space with one minor tradeoff.   Now when you walk into the room, you are greeted by the beautiful 4-poster bed.  The bedding was pretty good, but I swapped out the hideous red sheets for some fresh ones from Target with a mini yellow and white stripe pattern.

The tradeoff to putting the bed on the far wall and making it a focal point was to forgo a nightstand on each side of the bed in favor of one slightly larger nightstand on one side.  The little red cabinet made this tradeoff easier to swallow.  It adds such personality to the room that I have forgotten how much I prefer matching nightstands.  Plus, I had a lot of fun styling the little red cabinet.

On the other end of the room, we now have more space for a desk and sitting area.  The desk was in the room previously, but hidden in the far corner.  Now it is front and center across from the foot of the bed.  It is a fabulous spot for styling and adding extra splashes of red and turquoise into the room.

With the new layout we were able to put a chaise in the corner under the window.  The chaise used to be in our room, but never really got used.  It looks fabulous against the blue.  I think it has found a new home.  A couple pillows make it a comfy spot to read.  The blue pillow is one I made from Mod Green Pod Grand Jubilee fabric.  The red ticking stripe pillow was a HomeGoods find for $24.99.  It is a Ralph Lauren lumbar down pillow…so comfy it was worth every penny.

With so much more floor space at the foot of the bed, I wanted to add a rug.  A rug can instantly make any room feel cozier.  Remember a few weeks back when I started hoarding rugs from HomeGoods?  Well, the blue medallion rug happened to be the exact right shade of blue.  I love the punch of pattern on the floor.  Big impact for $50.

There is one other tradeoff that came with the new layout.  There is now a large blank wall to the left of the bed.  To leave an adequate walkway to the bed and the bathroom, I can’t fit any furniture on this wall.  No room with a giant blank wall can be considered finished.  The framed fine paper art was perfect for filling up this void of wall space.  It also injects more red into the room.  If I ever get around to it, I would love to add some wainscoting to this wall between the doors for more interest on the lower half of the wall.

I think our house guests have enjoyed the fresh space.  I am glad I was able to repurpose my Modern Americana design from the family room and achieve it in the guest room.  The blue, red, white, and yellow certainly make this room inviting, cozy, and interesting!

Thanks Andrea. I was hoping to add more pops of yellow to the room to play off the sheets, but nice yellow accessories are hard to come by.

I love a lot of things about this room: the color of the walls, the rug, the new sheets, the chaise, and the cabinet! This room is really a treat for guests! However, if it were my room, I would consider having darker wood frames for the art across from the bed. That way, they would tie in with the wood of the bed, mirror, and chaise. Alternatively, white frames would be a good choice to tie in with the color of the desk and duvet. This could be accomplished by “borrowing” frames from other rooms, or by sanding and staining or painting the existing frames. However, if you love the frames now then I would consider reframing the images on the desk in a matching wood to tie everything together.
