I made a cute little tweak to the nursery this weekend.
I saw two of these convex mirrors at Home Goods, but passed them up. They had an antique white finish and were priced at $29.99 each. That is more than I would normally consider paying for a decor item that I have to makeover. Then I went home and couldn’t get that little mirror out of my head. The round shape. The novelty of the convex mirror. The deep frame. I imagined it’s cuteness in the nursery. But I had let it slip away.
On my next trip to Home Goods, I was surprised to see one of these mirrors left. There it was, but I still was not sure it was worth $29.99. I figured if it was stuck in my head for over a week, I would always like it. So, I splurged and brought it home.
Knowing this mirror needed a makeover, but not wanting to spend any more money on it, I looked through my paint stash. I did not have any spray paint or latex paint in the right color, but I did have a tube of Martha Stewarts craft paint in Pool. It was the perfect aqua for the nursery. It is the same aqua shade found on the crib skirt and curtains. It also matches the vinyl I used to make the numbered dresser.
I coated the mirror frame with one coat of primer and two coats of craft paint. I did not tape of the mirror before painting. It would have been too difficult to tape the round and convex mirror. I used a 2″ angle brush (the same one I trim walls with) to carefully trim around the mirror and paint the frame. After a coat of primer and two coats of craft paint, I used the edge of my xacto knife to carefully scrape astray paint off the mirror.
This round little guy found a spot in the corner of the nursery. The mirror is only 14″ in diameter, so it works well on the small wall next to the window. I also placed it here, because if we peek in the room at night, we can look into the mirror and see our son sleeping in the crib. Love the convex shape!
The round shape mimics the circles on the bottom of the curtains and crib skirt fabric. It also looks fun with the sputnik mobile. The aqua blue pops off the dark teal walls. This mirror is such a fun little accent to see when you walk in the room.
