Mom Inc. Book Review
Mom, Inc. was a super quick, but good read! I think I devoured it in less than 2 days. I love reading how women business owners got their start and how they grow their families and businesses.
The book was cowritten by Meg Mateo Ilasco, the author of another book on my bookshelf, called Craft, Inc. Her co-writer for Mom, Inc. was the writer behind the blog Designing Moms, Cat Seto. The two teamed up to deliver this guide for all moms looking to start or grow a business.
When I got done reading, my first instinct was to recommend the book to my hubby. I know it is called Mom, Inc., but I think the advice inside applies to anyone wanting to start a business. I was most impressed by several of the featured businesses which were actually husband and wife teams, like Rob and Cortney Novogratz of Sixx Design and the TV show 9 by Design or Abby and Tait of Style Me Pretty. I would love to be in business with my husband some day. I particularly wanted to share those stories with him.
The book was really well organized and complete (an all-in-one guide), yet concise. I had read similar advice in a variety of books previously, but this new all-in-one guide presentation was refreshing. My favorite part was the interviews with all the real businesses…that is where the value was for me. I found the interviews inspiring. I also earmarked several pages to refer to in the future. As I start and grow my own business I will look back on the following sections; creating a mom statement, what to charge, establishing an original brand, making your marketing plan, and finding balance.
I have been following the Mom, Inc. blog since before the book when it was called Designing Moms. Since the book launch they have continued to interview mom business owners on the blog, even re-interviewing some from the book. The interviews can be found under the Featured Designing Moms category.
If you are a woman business owner or an aspiring one, highly recommend picking up a copy of Mom, Inc. and following Mom, Inc. daily.
