I have pined after raw wood cutting boards with dipped handles. First I saw these colorblocked cutting boards at Anthropologie. Then these raw wood boards in all sizes caught my eye at West Elm. They are not the kind of cutting boards you tuck away. These are the kind you display. They can add a fun pop of color in the kitchen. I just could not bring myself to spend $40-$300 on a “cutting board” meant only for serving cheese and bread. I had to make my own.
Then, the clouds parted and the angels sang, when I spotted this acacia wood cutting board at Target for $9.99! All it needed was a little DIY magic.
I used painter’s tape to tape off the handle area to be painted.
I painted the handle with three light coats of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Provence. I happen to paint everything with Provence chalk paint lately. I opted for chalk paint on this project, because I wanted the nice matte finish to go with the raw wood board. Once the paint was dry, I removed the tape revealing a nice crisp line.
The last step was to drill a hole and add a jute hanger. I used a 3/8″ drill bit. I recommend masking the area with painter’s tape to protect from chips during drilling. I put a length of jute twine through the hole and tied the two ends into a knot forming a hanging loop.
I am super in love with my $10 dipped handle cutting board! I plan to put a nail in the end panel by the stove to hang my board. I have to admit I am not loving the wood on wood action. This board is making me really want to paint my kitchen cabinets white.
