The Oxford Dictionary defines a hipster as
“a person who follows the latest trends and fashions.”
Based on that definition my hubby and I are totally hipsters. As far as apparel and home decor go we love lots of the hipster trends. Many, many other definitions veer into describing hipsters in terms of politics and anti-conformity, which really don’t apply to us. So maybe we aren’t hipsters?!
I love this take on what a hipster is (trying to dispel some of the negativity around the word) from The Hipster Effect:
“We use the word hipster on people who express themselves more eccentrically than we ourselves do. It has become a term of comparison. The girl in the used sedan thinks the guy on the Vespa is a hipster, the guy on the Vespa thinks the girl on the fixed-gear bike is a hipster, the girl on the fixed-gear thinks the guy on the unicycle is a hipster, and on it goes.”
Are you a hipster? If not, chances are you know (or think you know) a hipster or two. But do you know what they like? What would make a thoughtful, appreciated gift?
I love gift roundups, but so many of them seemed focused on the people who are already easy to shop for. I plan to share a few gift idea roundups this season, but for the people who aren’t as easy to shop for, because you may not understand what they like. And, for an added twist, I am going to share gift ideas for the home.
To kick off the gift ideas, I am starting with the Hipster Home. If you are not a hipster, it may seem like a strange subculture to you. And without a clear and concise definition, it might seem hard to nail down. So, here is a little roundup of gifts any hipster could appreciate and we think are fun!
So, whose the hipster in your life?
